The Internet is a major source of user traffic for many aspects such as shopping, social media, research, or even banking. Everything that is done on the Internet can be tracked by numerous people such as the government and hackers. To keep your information safe while you browse the web, shopping, or checking your bank account here are a couple top tips for safeguarding your information while being an active user on the Internet:
Keep your password individualistic and different.
Avoid passwords that include any personal information about you. Instead, use something that only you would know. Also, every 30 days is a good time span to change your password. Finally, do not re-use passwords that you have set up for other websites. Once a username and password is compromised through one website, your username and password will be exposed for not only that single website but also for other websites you use them for.
Keep your personal information to yourself.
Do not leave PIN numbers, passwords, or any personal documents laying around for others to see. Also, do not give personal information over the phone, email, or Internet unless you are the one initiating the contact. If you receive a phone call or email asking to verify personal information, refuse to give out any information and end the call immediately. If you are unsure if information should be or has been given out, notify the bank and we can assist you with this.
Be wise about Wi-Fi.
If you are using a public wireless network, be cautious about the types of information you may be sending over the internet. Public wireless networks allows anyone to have access to the network, which means anyone can access to your information sent over that network. Instead, use a secure wireless network so your information is protected.
The “Log Off” Button is key.
When logged onto a website, whether it be your bank account or your social media site, always click the “Log Off” button before closing out of the browser itself. Doing this makes sure your session is ended and no more information can be given over the web.
Only open links that you know are safe.
Links through emails can sometimes be fake just to access your information, while appearing to be legitimate websites. If you are unsure of a link or the sender it is coming from, type the address directly in the address bar to avoid going to an unknown page. Same goes to files, only download the file if you know for sure what it is, and it does not come from a pop-up website. Downloading an unknown file can lead to gaining viruses or malware on your computer. For these reasons, always make sure to keep your anti-virus protector updated on your computer and participate in system scans often.
